OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Metro Capital Defender’s Office-Criminal Investigator I


The Georgia Capital Defender- Metro Office is accepting applications for a full-time Criminal Investigator I representing indigent defendants in State Capital cases at the trial level. Mitigation Criminal Investigators play an integral part in the capital defense team’s work by providing expert guidance in the areas of mental health, cognitive impairments, developmental disabilities, impact of trauma, adverse childhood experiences, as well as other psychosocial factors. The Investigator must be accurate, precise, and pay close attention to detail. The candidate selected will be offering support to clients while guiding them through the legal process. Must possess the capacity to identify, collect, and review a vast array of records relating to the client’s life history. The Investigator must be able to organize and prioritize workload to manage cases efficiently, in addition to working collaboratively with a team of attorneys, experts, and the court. The ability to absorb and integrate large amounts of information is preferred. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Job Description and Requirements: A master’s degree in social work, psychology or a related field is preferred. Experience in criminal and /or capital litigation, and knowledge of social history and mental health issues is a plus. Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel extensively throughout Georgia and out of state. Spanish-speaking also a plus.

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university and must meet the prerequisites and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program certification; or two (2) years of experience in law enforcement or related field and Georgia P.O.S.T. certification. Note: Some positions may require the incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.
