OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Workers Compensation, State Board of

Our Enforcement Division’s staff attorney must be a self-starter, with a positive outlook, who is detail oriented and enjoys working with a team. The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, as well as excellent time management skills.

As the division staff attorney, you will join a team of compliance officers and criminal investigators who work with businesses operating in Georgia to assure compliance under the workers' compensation law, to deter fraud through education, public relations and investigations, and to enforce the rules and regulations of the Workers' Compensation Board. In cases of non-compliance, you will negotiate settlement of cases, draft and file the appropriate documents with the court, and when appropriate prepare for hearings and litigate the cases in before the Board’s Administrative Law Judges.  In support of the Board’s mission to educate and provide excellent public relations, you also may have the opportunity to represent the Board on committees, in meetings at training events, and work on other special projects, as needed.

Our ideal candidate is a self-starter, with a positive outlook, who is detail-oriented and enjoys working with a team. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, as well as impressive time management, legal research & writing skills, knowledge of judicial procedures & rules of evidence, the ability to determine compliance with the rules and regulations of workers’ compensation law, and the ability to determine the sufficiency of the information.

Minimum Training & Experience:  Completion of a law degree AND License to practice law in the State of Georgia OR Eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR Reciprocity.

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
