OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Administrative Services, Department of - DOAS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Fiscal unit of the Department of Administrative Services seeks an Accountant 3.  The Accountant 3 will serve as a subject matter expert and organizational resource in assigned areas, providing advanced-level accounting support and ensuring compliance with complex financial rules, regulations, and standards, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).  This role requires a strong ability to analyze, reconcile, and maintain fiscal integrity across multiple accounting functions while supporting operational needs and financial reporting.

Job Responsibilities:

·         Serve as a subject matter expert and organizational resource in assigned accounting areas.

·         Analyze and reconcile accounting data and transactions requiring knowledge of complex rules, regulations, and practices.

·         Promptly process daily work tasks in accordance with established financial and accounting practices for assigned sub-systems.

·         Review and analyze general ledger accounts for fiscal integrity and compliance with applicable principles, standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures.

·         Identify and correct issues in general ledger accounts through timely recognition of problems and accurate adjustments.

·         Manage daily Accounts Receivable (AR) functions, including deposits, billing and collections, cash management, and system reconciliations; compile and analyze internal reports.

·         Provide customer service and operational support to the financial reporting unit.

·         Play a key role in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes, including reviewing, preparing, and posting journal entries.

·         Prepare advanced-level professional recommendations, analyses, and financial reports for management.

·         Assist in the development of policies and procedures for assigned accounting areas.

·         Maintain complete, accurate, and readily accessible accounting files in accordance with applicable standards, policies, and procedures.

·         Follow guidelines for providing information to others and auditors when necessary.

  • Maintains confidentiality of records, files and other documentation.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Knowledge of business operations (Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger)

·         Advanced Excel skills (creating spreadsheets, formulas, pivot tables, etc.)

·         Skills using queries and reports to monitor financial records

·         Advanced knowledge of accounting theory

·         Ability to retrieve information from the accounting system, analyze, identify and investigate discrepancies

·         Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills; Strong interpersonal skills

·         Excellent customer service skills

·         Excellent analytical skills

·         Experience using Microsoft office to include Word, Excel, and Outlook

·         Experience with PeopleSoft Financials

 

This position may require some travel.

 

Completion of a pre-employment background check is required.

 

DOAS participates in a hybrid work environment and

 

           telework is encouraged with some days in the office required.

MINIMUM ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor's degree in accounting and two (2) years of professional accounting job-related experience; or two (2) years of experience at the lower level Accountant 2 (FIP021) or position equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following items below.  PLEASE CLEARLY INDICATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THESE QUALIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME.   

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Advanced Excel skills (creating spreadsheets, pivot tables, VLOOKUP and IF formulas)
  • Knowledge of TeamWorks Financials
  • Five years Government accounting experience
  • Five or more years experience working in General Ledger, AP, AR and general accounting environment
