OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The Georgia Department of Labor is accepting applications to fill the Accountant 3 position in the General Accounting Unit at the Georgia Department of Labor Headquarters in downtown Atlanta, Ga.

Job Summary

The Accountant 3 analyzes financial information and programs, identifies financial trends, makes recommendations to management and prepares a full range of financial reports, including specialized and non -standard reports.

 

Essential Duties & Duties

 

  • Supports general accounting functions such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, account reconciliation, purchasing, asset management, and cash management.

 

  • Reviews and reconciles monthly accounting data and use advanced research and problem-solving skills to determine issues and the source/resolution for errors found.

 

  • Performs monthly bank reconciliations and identify variances at a detailed transaction level. Works with subsections of Finance to correct the variances.

 

  • Conducts analytical review of trial balance accounts to identify accounting errors needing resolution.

 

  • Analyzes business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments and obligations in order to project and advise on future revenue and expenses.

 

  • Prepares journal entries as required.

 

  • Reviews and/or assists with the creation of financial statements and year -end reports to support State and Federal year end close and report process.

 

  • Identifies and corrects procedural problems revealed in reviews and audits.

 

  • Completes and analyzes financial reports to determine fiscal integrity and compliance with principles, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.

 

  • Maintains accounting file information, responds to inquiries from third parties and resolve routine accounting problems, providing information and interpretation as needed.

 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

  

 Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of professional accounting experience

        OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and two years of professional accounting job-related experience; or two (2) years of experience at the lower level of Accountant 2 or equivalent position.

 

 

Preferred Qualification

  •  Five (5) years or more performing at least two of the following accounting functions: Accounts Receivables, Accounts Payables, General Ledger account reconciliations, Bank Reconciliations, Financial Reporting.
  •  Completion of State Financial Management Certificate Program or Government Accounting Program.
  •  Knowledge of and experience with the State’s financial management system TeamWorks (Peoplesoft).
  •  Knowledge of and experience with Workday financial management system
  •  Prior work experience in the government accounting field
  • Knowledge and expertise in managing federal grants

 

 Skills/Abilities

  •  Sound research, reporting and analytic skills.
  •  Must be a critical thinker and effective communicator
  •  Demonstrates a high level of organizational skills and detail orientation
  •  Solid relationship management skills
