Juvenile Justice, Georgia Department of - DJJ

Job Summary:

Directs the operation and administration of a correctional institution or unit. Develops and implements appropriate security and facility policies and procedures. Directs subordinate managers as well as other institutional staff. 

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Directs and personally monitors state prison security functions and activities to maintain the custody and security of prisoners 
  • Identifies training needs and provides guidance and training to correctional staff 
  • Manages human resources and directs administrative activities for corrections staff 
  • Manages the operations and activities of correctional facilities and detention centers 
  • Monitors budget activities of correctional facilities 
  • Monitors, inspects, and evaluates operations, programs, services, activities, and conditions 
  • Oversees and/or conducts inspections, searches, investigations, and evaluations 
  • Performs crisis response, containment, and intervention in emergencies 
  • Plans, implements, directs, and coordinates various correctional programs and activities 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of direct job-related experience in a criminal justice or correctional system, two (2) years of which with management experience.
  • Or five (5) years of supervisory custodial experience in a criminal justice or correctional system, two (2) years of which at a level equivalent to a manager in a law enforcement setting. 
  • Or five (5) years of directly related experience in a criminal justice or correctional system, eighteen (18) months of which experience is required at the lower level Mgr 2, Correctional Administration (PSM081) or position equivalent. 

 

Note: Some positions may require P.O.S.T. certification and agency-specific training and or certification. 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  •  3+ years in a leadership or management role, ideally in a secure residential or correctional facility.
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in juvenile justice, corrections, or a related human services field.
  •  Demonstrated experience with:
  • Managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Oversight of facility operations including safety, compliance, and budgeting.
  • Crisis intervention and behavioral management programs.
  • Implementing rehabilitative, evidence-based programs for youth.
  • Experience using facility management and case management software.
  • Understanding of juvenile justice laws, standards (e.g., PREA, ACA), and best practices.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, adolescent development, mental health, and rehabilitative approaches.
  • Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and team-building skills.
  •  Proficiency in developing and enforcing policy and procedure.
  • Familiarity with data-driven decision-making and performance metrics.
  • Effective communication and public relations skills.
  • Competence in budgeting, report writing, and regulatory compliance documentation
