Cordele Judicial Circuit – Chief Assistant (Assistant Public Defender IV)


The Georgia Public Defender Council is accepting applications for the position of Chief Assistant Public Defender for the Cordele Judicial Circuit, which encompasses Ben Hill, Crisp, Dooly, and Wilcox Counties. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for providing high-quality criminal defense representation for indigent clients in Superior Court. We are seeking an experienced attorney with the qualifications and skills necessary to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of this leadership role. The Assistant Public Defender IV, as the Chief Assistant, will play a key role in office leadership and management, in addition to handling significant trial work. Applicants must be active members in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia and possess a minimum of five years of relevant legal experience. The Chief Assistant will be integral to the effective operation of the office and should demonstrate a strong understanding of organizational structure and public defender functions.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender IV will be responsible for providing competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients. This position performs as an expert attorney, assigned to serious, high-profile, and significant felony cases, as well as represent clients in cases including the most serious, complex legal cases assigned to the office. As the Chief Assistant, the candidate selected should be prepared to direct subordinate staff engaged in criminal defense, in addition to advise and counsel other attorneys as to the case management practices of handling their assigned cases. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
