Alternate Public Defender (Metro Conflict) – Assistant Public Defender I


Entry-Level Attorney Positions – Atlanta Conflict Office

The Georgia Public Defender Council’s Atlanta Conflict Office is seeking applicants for two open attorney positions in its non-complex courtrooms. These roles involve handling pre-indictment and non-complex criminal cases. We welcome applications from newly barred attorneys, as well as law school graduates who have not yet taken the bar but are scheduled to sit for the July 2026 exam.

Applicants who have not yet obtained bar licensure will be hired at a salary of $60,000 until licensure is achieved. These positions are based in the central office located in downtown Atlanta.

No prior experience is required. However, a demonstrated commitment to public service and a strong interest in criminal defense are highly preferred.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender will provide competent and zealous representation and advocacy to indigent clients. This position involves entry-level professional legal work, including handling cases of routine complexity and assisting with more advanced matters as needed. Performs other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License). Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause
