POSITION OVERVIEW:

1.    The Mobile Fuel Laboratory Technician is responsible for the daily operation of the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Mobile Fuel Laboratory.

2.    This position conducts statewide sampling and chemical analysis of motor fuels sold in Georgia to ensure compliance with purity, performance, octane rating, and other quality standards.

3.    The role also includes testing kerosene for safety and performance requirements and responding to emergency fuel-related requests.

4.    The technician independently manages mobile laboratory operations, maintains laboratory equipment, and the vehicle’s service, maintenance, and any needed repairs in conjunction with fleet management.

5.    The technician performs field sampling and analysis at terminals, pipelines, and retail locations across the State of Georgia.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform day-to-day operations of the mobile fuel laboratory
  • Inspect, collect, and analyze motor fuel samples from oil terminal risers, storage tanks, pipelines, and trucks, as required
  • Sample and test fuel from all wholesale fuel terminals across the State of Georgia monthly
  • Collect and perform chemical analyses on fuel samples from oil pipeline facilities
  • Pull kerosene samples from retail locations during the winter season (October-April) and conduct on-site flashpoint testing for protection of Georgia consumers
  • Collect and test emergency fuel samples as requested by the Fuel and Measures Division
  • Properly maintain, calibrate, and standardize mobile laboratory instruments used in testing
  • Maintain service and operational readiness of the mobile laboratory generator
  • Maintain assigned state vehicle, including accurate service and maintenance records
  • Prepare and submit recurring and on-demand reports within established deadlines to State Fuel & Oil Laboratory Director
  • Maintain accurate sampling, testing, and documentation records
  • Ability to communicate professionally with industry representatives, retailers, and regulatory partners
  • Travel extensively throughout the State of Georgia, including overnight travel as needed
  • May require early morning, extended or irregular work hours to meet sampling schedules or emergency response needs
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in the field

Perform other duties as assigned

 

 

Physical Demands:

  • Constant standing/walking
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work from heights
  • Lift 35-pound fuel samples and sample containers
  • Potential exposure to petroleum vapors
  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and potential inclement weather 

 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Associate or bachelor’s degree in physical or natural science from an accredited college or university, which includes at least one course in mathematics, statistics, research methods, or a related course, with experience in a laboratory environment

·         Two years’ experience in a laboratory or sample testing related field.

High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in a laboratory setting or a related area, which one (1) year in a lead worker, team leader, or supervisory role; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Laboratory Tech 3 (LST032) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require licensure.
