Eastern Judicial Circuit – Assistant Public Defender I, II, III, IV


The Eastern Judicial Circuit, a single-county circuit encompassing Savannah, seeks multiple attorneys to represent indigent clients through all phases of criminal proceedings. Positions are available in both Superior and Juvenile Courts. The office includes divisions for Major Crimes, Other Felonies, Early Intervention (arrest through preliminary hearing), Juvenile and Appellate.  Assignments will be based on experience, and operational needs. This office emphasizes zealous, holistic representation. Our team includes Investigators, Social Workers, and a Mental Health Advocate Attorney. We provide in-house training and mentoring and cover State Bar dues and seminar/CLE fees. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to indigent defense or comparable public service and be members in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia. Salary commensurate with experience.

Description of Duties: Zealously representing indigent clients at the appropriate stages of the criminal process, depending on division assignment. All attorneys are expected to consider referrals to accountability courts and social services when appropriate. Experienced attorneys will assist in training and mentoring beginning attorneys. Performs other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License). Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause
