GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Internship Opportunity – Office of Community Planning, Research, and Geoanalytics

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ (DCA) Office of Community Planning, Research, and Geoanalytics is seeking an Atlanta-based intern. This position offers a flexible, collaborative work environment supporting senior staff on the Community Research and Surveys team across a variety of financial reporting programs.

The intern will assist with the administration and management of annual local government reporting requirements (e.g., excise tax, financial data, management indicators) as well as reporting requirements for local authorities (e.g., development, housing, hospital authorities). A strong interest in data collection and analysis methodologies—and a desire to shape how information is presented to help local governments understand and use it—will be beneficial.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learn and communicate detailed information about programs administered by the Office of Community Planning, Research, and Geoanalytics.
  • Manage datasets and collaborate with staff to support data analysis, training programs, and proactive use of data.
  • Explain timelines, processes, and available support to local governments, local authorities, regional commissions, external partners, and other DCA staff.
  • Provide consistent and professional customer service to all stakeholders.
  • Answer and direct phone calls and respond to general inquiry emails.
  • Draft and distribute emails, memos, forms, and other communications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Candidate Attributes:

This position offers an opportunity to work in a regulatory and policy-focused environment supporting Georgia’s cities, counties, regional commissions, and various governmental and quasi-governmental entities. Our ideal candidate will have some familiarity with local government structures, a basic understanding of public budgeting and financial management, and a strong interest in public service and effective community governance.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong research and technical writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a related field (e.g., Public Policy/Administration, Political Science, Government, City/Regional Planning, Economics) or have graduated within the past six months from a program in one of these fields
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • An interview will be required for consideration

WORKING CONDITIONS (TRAVEL,HOURS,ENVIRONMENT)

This position is available as an in-office position. Part-time: 15–29 hours per week (flexible based on class schedule and candidate availability)

Compensation: $13–$15 per hour (based on education level and prior experience)

PHYSICAL / SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Work is principally stationary, but the person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc., and constantly operates a computer and other office equipment.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

Must be able to perform office-related duties.

Must be able to operate office equipment.

Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, tenants, and community agencies and other entities that provide services.

Must be able to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Must be able to perform essential job functions in an environment that will sometimes include increased levels of work-related stress.

Must maintain punctuality and attendance as scheduled.
