Alternate Public Defender (East Central) – Assistant Public Defender III


The Alternate Public Defender East Central Regional Office is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Public Defender III in Augusta, Georgia. Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities for the position, including preparing cases for trial, zealously advocating and defending their client, seeking and negotiating plea depositions, and entering pleas in the felony cases in Superior Court. This role requires strong advocacy skills, sound legal judgment, and a commitment to public defense. Applicants must be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender III provides competent, diligent, and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients. This position functions as an experienced attorney, handling serious, high-profile, and significant felony cases. The Assistant Public Defender III will conduct case investigations and develop defense strategies, negotiate plea agreements and represent clients during plea proceedings, draft and file motions, pleadings, and other legal documents, and maintain effective communication with clients, and courts. Performs other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and two (2) years of relevant legal -experience; or two (2) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021).
