Coweta Judicial Circuit- Assistant Public Defender I


The Coweta Judicial Circuit is seeking to hire an Assistant Public Defender I for the Coweta County/Newnan, GA office.  The role will provide competent and zealous representation and advocacy to indigent clients in Coweta County, focusing on Juvenile clients facing criminal and delinquency charges. The selected candidate will also represent clients in the Coweta County Alternative Treatment Courts. Applicants must meet the position qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities. Applicants must be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia, or have taken the February 2026 Bar Exam, or be eligible to sit for the July 2026 Bar Exam. Criminal defense experience is preferred.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender I demonstrates a strong commitment to representing indigent clients and ensuring the best defense. This position involves performing beginning-level professional legal work, including assisting in cases of routine complexity. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, legal research, client communication, case preparation, and courtroom advocacy. Performing other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License). Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause
